Paula Ferguson
    Counsellor

Welcome

Hello, and thank you for visiting my website. My name is Paula Ferguson and I am a qualified Person‑Centred Counsellor and Psychotherapist. I have been practising since 2015 after completing my training at the University of Strathclyde.

I am based in Edinburgh. Having worked in a variety of caring roles, including nursing and youth work, I recognised early in my working life that working collaboratively with people was right for me, ensuring the client feels they have ample power and autonomy in the helping relationship, and it is this ethos that brought me into counselling. My approach is very much rooted in the notion that me and the client are working together and that I'm not the expert in the room. Instead I'm there to support you to work out what is best for you.

I qualified as a counsellor in 2015 after completing a Post-Graduate Diploma in Person-Centred Counselling at Strathclyde University. Presently I am offering online sessions.

How I Work

In person‑centred therapy, the relationship is at the heart of the work. I aim to offer three core qualities:

  • Empathy – really trying to understand your world as you experience it

  • Unconditional positive regard – valuing you without judgement

  • Genuineness – being real and honest in our work together

These qualities help create a space where you can feel heard, understood, and accepted. I believe in you and your capacity for growth, and my role is to work reflectively and curiously to help you better understand yourself and your situation.

"In my early professional years I was asking the question: How can I treat, or cure, or change this person? Now I would phrase the question in this way: How can I provide a relationship which this person may use for their own personal growth?"

Carl R. Rogers, pioneer of Person-Centred Therapy.

What You Can Expect

Our sessions are your time. You decide what feels important to explore, and we go at a pace that feels right for you.

My role isn’t to “fix” you, but to walk alongside you as you make sense of what’s happening in your life. Therapy can feel challenging at times, but it can also feel grounding and comforting to have someone with you as you explore your thoughts and feelings.

Should we each decide in our initial meeting that we’re a good fit for each other, I’ll support you in uncovering different layers of your experience and deepening your understanding of yourself, your relationships, and your place in the world. With greater self‑understanding often comes greater self‑compassion.
